UL EN Fire Curtain System is a passive fire protection measure that contains fire and smoke within a defined area for a specified period, buying critical time for occupants to evacuate and for active systems and fire services to respond. Unlike active systems, it works without requiring detection, power or activation.
An alarm only tells people a fire has started — it does not stop fire and smoke from spreading. UL EN Fire Curtain System physically contains that spread within a compartment, which is what protects escape routes and gives occupants time to get out safely.
It needs periodic inspection to confirm seals, doors and rated barriers have not been compromised by later renovation work, cable penetrations or wear, since even small breaches can reduce its fire rating significantly.
Ratings are usually specified in terms of fire resistance duration (for example 60, 90 or 120 minutes) based on the occupancy risk assessment and the applicable building code for the project.
